In early 2024, a small group of passionate educators, community workers, and volunteers in Mumias came together with one shared vision: to create opportunity where it had been missing for every child. What if boys and girls in our community, regardless of their background or ability, could dream bigger, reach higher, and be equipped with tools to build their futures
From these conversations, The Lighting Lamps Initiative (LLI) was born not from grand funding or outside influence, but from lived experience, local voices, and the deep belief that transformation begins at home.
We didn’t begin with buildings or big programs. We began by listening. To the student who longed to explore science but had never seen a lab. To the parent struggling to afford school uniforms and healthcare. To the teacher hoping to inspire but lacking resources. To youth overflowing with talent but lacking a stage, a coach, or a guide.
These voices became our foundation.
They lit the first lamp
LLI was established to support boys and girls, including those with disabilities, through inclusive, community-rooted programs. We champion STEM education, mentorship, sustainable livelihoods, health and nutrition awareness, and creative arts. Our approach is holistic because a child’s mind, body, and spirit must all be nurtured for them to thrive.
We believe that when one child is empowered, a household is uplifted, a school becomes stronger, and a community moves forward. And when that happens again and again the region begins to shine.
Today, LLI continues to grow as a youth-focused, people-powered movement. One child. One family. One lamp at a time.
